Earthquake in the State of Gujarat:
On the morning of January 26, 2001 (which happens to be the republic day of India) at 0846 hours a devastating earthquake with its epicenter at Bhuj (Kutch) occurred. The worst hit areas was the entire Kutch region, Ahmedabad, Surendranagar and Surat. Thousands of people lost their lives and many more were injured and rendered homeless. The Jewish Community of Ahmedabad and the Synagogue did not suffer any damage.
Magen Abraham Synagogue Earthquake Relief Committee:
An earthquake relief committee was formed during the 1st week of February 2001, in view of the relief efforts and help to be given to the people affected. Members from the managing committee and other members from the community working at hospitals, Ex-Army official were appointed to the committee. As an initial effort an amount of Rs. 35000 donated by members of the Jewish Community of Gujarat was donated to V. S. Hospital.
